keeping the GT - so now on with the modifying!

Right, I've decided to keep the GT.

I was worried about piling milage onto it, but what the hell, thats what its built for! So I'm now going to do a few mods to help it along the way.

First things first I'm going to fit some G40 calipers, discs, pads etc. KarlcoupeCL helped me ages ago with this, but I can't find the post anymore. I remember though that the caliper bolts onto the pre-existing GT carrier, I just need to get some longer bolts from GSF I believe? At the same time I'm also going to fit braided hoses at the front, but I'll leave the master cylinder standard for the time being.

Secondly, I'm after some new wheels and tyres. Its currently running the standard 5.5x13 steel wheels with GT trims, but some alloy-age is needed. I was hell bent on some 13x7's, but looking at most Polo's it seems 14's are a better choice, and with some correct profile tyres fitted it shouldn't be any detriment to handling. At the same time I'll lower it by 40mm on some decent shocks and springs. I understand I need an ET38 offset? And are 14x6 wheels available? Will these fit ok under the arches without mods, including the lowering? I want to get Yoko A539 tyres if at all possible.

Sorry for all the questions, its just now I'm not selling it, and also because I'm not spending every night in the garage building the Mini (finally finished that and did the Nurburgring!), I have more time and money to spend on the Polo.

Thanks in advance!

Tom

Yeah, you will be fine with 14x6" wheels and you can get A539's in 185-50 R14 and 195-45 R14, both are fine. Offsets between ET 30-38 will be fine.

Thats good to hear!

Brakes should be spot on with that set-up. One that most G40 and some GT owners recommend is using standard brembo discs with soem raicam pads (the pads available from pitstop developments). Goodridge braided hoses shoulnt set you back more than £37 and maybe replace the bleed screws on the vented calipers while you're there.

Yes, GT carriers will work with the longer bolts (this gives greater wheel choice).

195/45/14 would make sure you had little or no scrubbing with a 40mm drop on 14s. There are so many suspension kits avialable, the most critical factor is price as to what choice you get. If you're feeling brave you can buy an FK kit off german ebay for around the 160-170 quid mark with shipping. Though thats if you are very brave!
