Oil consumption

After just 5.000 km, I got an indication to check the engine oil. The car apparently needed almost a litre of oil which I added. The dealer told me that this is normal for new engines, although I wonder if it is a bit TOO much for German engineering standards.
Is this common for new polos?
I' ve got the 16v model.

If you do a search you will find a very similar thread.
When my car had just a few 1000 miles on the clock I had to put a litre of oil in. I think a few other people have also had to do this.
For reference, mine is a 1.4 16v.

My Sport tdi drank like an alcoholic - My Oil light flashes and beeps quite a bit. Strange considering my car is on extended servicing.
Once I hit the 10,000 mark consumption dropped - phew.

I've got the FSi and around 8500 miles. I check the oil once a week and it hasn't needed any yet!
Although I know someone with the 1.4 75 had to top up recently. around 3000 miles I think.

It's the diesel engines that tend to be the bigger drinkers but they all drink a few extra litres in there first 20,000 miles (though VAG has never bothered to tell us why!)

Mine asked for oil at around 2500 miles (1.4. petrol). Stuck half a litre in and everything's been fine (with the oil, anyway) since.
Oil use

VW included 1l of oil with my 1.9 TDi Sport - it even came in a nice faux leather case

The dealer said they'd started doing this because they'd had so many complaints from people that oil topups were needed so early on. This tells me that some oil useage is perfectly normal.
In my case, i've done 3,500 and it's still got plenty of oil, although I still check it regularly. I don't do any short runs so i'm guessing that helps.
