Had my 10,000 mile service done in about October time, at 10,500 miles.
Now, just coming up to 18,000, I get the display telling me that it needs a service in 800 miles time, that's not right, thats 18,800, not 21,500!!

Reading the manual, it says that the flexible service interval display lets you know when the next service is due, taking into account driving stlye (thrashin the nuts off it) and a few other things.

So there you have it, if you thrash the poor little thing like I often do, it will ask for a service sooner!

tis funny that! me thinks its just a plan by vw to get people to service cars more regularly = more £££££££££££££££££££££ for them

that you can have your car set up on:

(a) variable servicing
(b) standard (i.e. every 12months or 10,000 miles).

I WANT mine on variable and as 1st car was i thought replacement was. Found out stupid cow set me up on scheduled servicing!! GREAT!

Yeah. The dealer rang us up yesterday and asked us what we wanted it setting to. We went for the Annual service, as we are paying monthly for it.

All VW's except for the Lupo now come as standard with variable servicing. Most dealers don't know what they are talking about though.

It's written in the back of the VW price list!

Depending on driving style, blah blah, between 9,000 and 19,000 for petrol engines and up to 30,000 on some dielsel engines

Our Beetle came from the factory with variable servicing and long life oil.
Dealer stamped the book tellin us to come in after 10,000 miles.

As of yet the car still hasn't told us it needs a service, nearly 15,000 on the clock now.

sparkstack, what is the service interval on your beetle, if it wasn't on variable I mean. Because its which ever comes sooner int it?

polo2k, you are indeed correct, don't know what happened there

Mole : The Beetle came from the factory with the Variable servicing already enabled C/W the long life engine oil (different spec oil, bloody expensive) So it's due a service when the light comes on. Your guess is as good as mine as to when that will be. Your right about "whichever comes soonest" but the way it works is 2yr or 19,000 miles. I've only had the car for 14 Months or so. Not that i care, won't have it after 9:00am Sat Morning

Point is, the dealer didn't bother to check this (big sticker in boot) and so just filled out the service book details for me to bring it back after 10K

Gotcha

Spoke to my VW dealer today, you can switch to variable AFTER you've had a full service (dealer I use does this at 20,000 miles)

But if your car was supplied as fixed servicing it would have a different spec oil in it than the one for Variable servicing cars. So you would practically have to watch the dealer change the oil to ensure that he put the correct stuff in.

I would. Or else i would be constantly worried that my engine was gonna blow
