Nice one viceroy! That's a promising review there, I was hoping for something good to come of the Polo GTI and it looks like we're gonna get something decent after all... so very tempting to upgrade! It's all about the benjamins though, time will tell

I still don't think it's as good looking as the 6n2 GTi though, although I wouldn't say no to one.

I couldn't believe it the other day, there was a Golf GTi at my work, so I took a look inside to see how good the interior was. I can honestly say I was a bit disappointed in it, I'd have wanted more for the money

Have a look at the top pic on that review, those new seats in the Polo (you can just see them through the windscreen) look really good, they look to have much more lateral support at the sides of the chair than my seats have got. Also, I might be in the minority here but I actually quite like the Interlagos check trim too!

Seems like the yanks are basically saying its a s**t golf ??

i would say the 6n2 has the nicer chassis and looks. but im obviously going to be bias!

Typical yank review, I'll wait for Topgear to get there hands on one to pass comment, I don't know why they've made it look almost identical to the golf gti I hate it when car manufacturers do this, does look ok I spose

new polo looks promising mite have to take one for a test drive when thy eventuallt gets over here. just wana point out though it's aussie review

Some people hate the fact it looks like the Golf GTI. I think it's a compliment. At least they aren't milking the badge like Vauxhall and "VXR". The Astra and Vectra are enough really

Ya, but you have to ask yourself. Wouldn't you be better saving up that 2k more and getting a 1 year old mk5 golf gti. To me its just a shrunk down golf with not particularly good handling or interior. They went grown up on a polo, bad idea, its a small hot hatch and it should be funky.

VW seem to have gone for the same look of their cars in the whole range, and every 18 months they slightly tweak the headlights or the grille and release a new model.

Depends if you can afford the running costs I got a quote for the Mk5 Golf GTI and it was £2200. Both are great cars, it just boils down to what you need, what you can afford, and what you like.

You can look at generations of cars, regardless of maker, and many look like shrunk versions. Mk2 Polo is a shrunk Mk2 Golf. Mk1 Polo is a shrunk Mk1 Golf, Mk5 Polo is a shrunk (and much better looking) Mk4 Golf. Mk6 Fiesta is a shrunk Mk1 Focus. Mk4 Corsa is a shrunk Mk5 Astra.

Thats not true, Im not just saying it looks like a shrunk golf, im saying it is a shrunk golf. There is no GAP in the market, take the difference between the fiesta zetec S compared to the focus ST. HUGE difference, not only in looks (the countour is nothing like nor is the rear end) same goes for the corsa and the astra. Athough in some respects the different classes of car are getting closer than they used to be. Its just in VW its too close. 9n3 GTi is so close to a golf mk5 GTi that theres no point plumping for the polo.

With the 6n2 and the lupo they are small and have funky interiors, all I see on the 9n3 is a bit of silver coloured trim and a GTi steering wheel. Compare the inteior to the golf, not a great deal of difference, too grown up hot hatches, except one is FAR better performance, handling and spec.

Have you driven a mk5 golf GTI? I have and I took out the 9N3 yesturday, the handling in the golf is amazing. You have a fair point about the running costs, but if you can afford a brand new 15k car then surely you can stretch to the golf. I was working the figures out with the dealer, If i want a decent spec 9n3 GTi you are talking £17,000 at least! (it has LESS features than the 6n2 GTi as standard and that was 6 years ago). For 17k you can pick up a second hand golf with a decent spec in good condition, and somone has taken the depreciation hit for you.

I agree with what andyg has said. The running costs won't be that much more for the Golf 30+mpg is easily acheivable in the Golf GTI and insurance won't be that much more.

Don't really see the point in the Polo GTI tbh as said above a decent spec one is £17k which is used Golf GTI money. If they drop the base price by £1,500, give it a funky interior/exterior and a decent chassis then there onto a winner.

Yes I've driven it and it's a fantastic car to drive. Yet to try the new GTI. The Golf is obviously going to be better than the Polo. I am disappointed with the lack of standard equipment in comparison to the 6n2 though. Price will be the negative factor in the case of the Polo, as you can get a Cupra for cheaper, or a Golf for a couple of grand more new (or second hand for the same price specced up as you mentioned
