poorly GTi

Post by metalblue »

Had been stuck in traffic for about 30 minutes, crawling along my GTi started making a noise from underneath the front like something was stuck in the wheels or a flat. Got out checked nothing obvious so carried on driving.

Cleared traffic got out on the motorway no strange sounds (although perhaps a bit more noise but not sure) and was driving ok (although did notice my temp gauge dropped to 70 before going back to the middle)

Left motorway and came to a series of roundabouts, traffic lights etc, gearbox seemed a bit stiff but managed to change gears no problem, car did seem a bit noisey and not pulling as well as normal. After a while the speedo packed up and I came to another roundabout where no gear could be selected, eventually got it into gear with a horrible smell coming from underneath, as my first thought was clutch and I was near local tyre/clutch/exhaust place made a crawl for that but although I could select all gears if in fouth the engine would just rev, also the petrol gauge is giving random readings now.

I'm thinking the local tyre/exhaust place isn't going to be able to assist but would be grateful of any clues as I suspect this is going to VW and knowing what a clued up bunch you are on here I want half an idea of possible causes ahead of the "quote"

cheers all

it's the gearbox. just been quoted between £575 (if barings) and £700 (worst case) which includes new clutch so not too bad
