cold start idle problems

Mk 2 polo - auto choke.
Drop my son to school every morning.
Starts from cold fine, idles fine ....well at least initially.
BUT
drive for about a mile, stop in traffic (same place every day) and she cuts out, restarts first turn , then I have to heel and toe every time we come to a stop to prevent it cutting out. Always restarts first time no probs and accelerates no probs.
After I drop him off, get back in the car and it starts and goes with NONE of the above issues - its warmer then though.
Anyone got any suggestions....maybe an auto choke problem?

Sounds like carb icing to me, do you have the hot air pipe running from the top of the exhaust manifold to the air intake and is the hot air valve working properly?

My bro has a MK2 1300 Golf and it's doing the same...........where is the hot air valve? Is it the wee round box that is between the manifold hot air pipe and the air filter? If so how do ya know if it's working properly?
Cheers

Hi polock - icing eh? Would it really happen after starting? I mean it runs fine for about 2 or 3 mins driving then iand only then does it go all strange, yes I do have the pipe you refer to and how do I check the valve is working?

yes, as far as i know icing is caused by the rapid passage of cold, moist air into the carb. Its happened to myself on many occasions, frustrating but alas something ive grown to live with when it happens.
there should be a vacuum pipe attached to the top of the intake. this activates the hot air valve when the engine is cold. As far as i know to check this is working applying manual suction to the valve will make it open but i may be wrong. Also starting the engine from cold and inspecting the hot air valve close up will determine if its opena dn working properly.
Anyone else offer up some good advice?
Cheers.

Check out Optima21's post on my thread below.
I'm gonna try this at the weekend as my Polo is the same in Winter - Starts first time in a morning - idles okay for a few minutes but as soon as the temperature pointer climbs to that first white line the engine begins to idle irattically and I have to keep my foot on the accelerator to avoid it cutting out - very annoying when approaching traffic lights! Once the engine gets warmer and the pointer passes into the normal area the engine picks up and the problem goes away.
