i am clueless when it comes to things like this

what do i need to upgrade? callipers? pads? discs? i just want better brakes cos i nearly didnt stop quick enough the other day.

iv seen drilled and grooved? this is just for quicker cooling isnt it? is it essential?
what sort of size discs would i need and can anyone recomend any manufacturers?

anyone else upgraded on the 9n?

If you have 5x100 stud pattern then the easiest and cheapest route would be the 312mm standard TT/Golf anniversary set up which can be found second hand form £100 upwards. These work well with a Polo weighted car. The Ibiza Cupra 160pd has the small brembo set up which would be good but hard to come by at the right price. I suppose you need to work out your budget and then see what is available within this.
You would need at least 16" wheels too just to be sure these would fit, probably 17" if you want brembo's

On all the 9n's appart from the GT I understand that you have to replace the hubs and (other gubbins?) as it's not an easy swap for carriers and callipers like on the GT

i am running 15's and dont plan to get any bigger rims really iv been looking thru some sites and have come up with Greenstuff discs and pads and Black diamond discs and pads specific for the 1.2 9n. so they wont need hubs changing etc?
they are within my budget and should do the job. any opinions on them?

New discs and pads will just be a straight swap and shouldn't take more than about an hour to do yourself. Wouldn't touch Greenstuff pads myself - had them on my 306, they were unpredictable and glazed up pretty quickly. Never heard a bad word against Black Diamond discs though.

The bits I could recommend are ATE Power Discs (had them on the 306 with Pagid pads after I binned the Greenstuffs) or Brembo Max discs (I'm not sure if you can get them for the 9n) and either Pagid Fast Road or Ferodo DS2500 pads (I reckon you can get them for the 9n). I've got Brembo Max on my 6n and have put Pagids on every car I've had for about the last 6 years...

EBC green or red have given me problems in the past too. I would go the Pagid or Ferodo route as stated.

Does anyone know if 1.9 tdi brakes are bigger than 1.4 tdi brakes?

As far as I know, 1.4tdis and 1.9tdi 100s run the same 256mm discs up front. I think the GT has 288s. As i say, I'm not certain, but I think that's how it is...

M7 - I had Black Diamond on 1.9TDI, fitted them myself. Great brakes and a straight forward fit.
