Performance Degredation

I gots a question for any tech heads out there.

My Gti has 63k on the clock, I replace the oil every 5k and I wait approx 10 mins before taking the revs over 3.5k. With time the engine parts will wear, it will burn more oil and the engine will steadily produce less power as it gets older.

My question is, when will that start effecting this particular V-dub engine? Has anyone experience with power and performance degredation on older engines?

I hate putting miles on my GTi and I love takin the needle up to 6k but I always feel a little guilty that im wearing it out too fast. (I wanna keep this car a long time).

End of the day, that car was built to wear the GTi badge.

Hence, I don't really seeing the guilt in using it as the God's of Volkswagen intended it to. So long as it is maintained properly, and driven properly when cold, what's the problem.

Personally I would feel more guilty about covering it up in cotton wool and driving it like an old woman, than "waaaping" it round to the limiter when I want to.

Not exactly the same engine but my friend had a 1.8 8v MK2 Golf with 156k on the clock and it ran 114bhp on a rolling road compared to its original 112bhp claimed from the factory at the same day a MK3 2.0 8V Golf with 140k ish on the clock ran 121bhp compared to 115bhp from the factory both cars were running full performance exhausts and air filters though.

I think the Polo engine will last just aswell assuming the oil changes are kept up, I might be putting mine on the rollers on Saturday with almost 64k on the clock I ran the car on the same rollers at 26k ish and got 132.5bhp on a standard car it might give a good comparison.

Ofcourse, there is a happy medium. You have to bear in mind the 6n2 GTi is going to be a classic, with its short production run as you know its a rare car. Im tryin to look after it and give it some stick. I can't resist giving it some on the twisty b roads near me, too much fun. Or when some nacker in a corsa pulls along side revving his shed at the lights.
