my clutch cable is on its way out, as i need to push the pedal right down to change gear, and getting in reverse is almost impossible. the gears are fine as it goes into all gears very easily when the engine is swithced off. i was told that the polo gti had a self-tightening clutch cable, not sure if this is true or not. anyway i have orded a new cable, comes to about £20. does anyone know if its an easy job fitting a new clutch cable? or should i leave to a pro to do it? im no mechanic whats so ever but im quite comfortable doing small jobs on my car. also i know the haynes manuals dont cover the polo gti but does anyone know of any sites or manuals that may have some kind of diagrams/help topics that can walk you through doing a job like this? any help would be great...many thanks lads....

Hi there, welcome to the forums! :D

can't help you mutch with the fitting side of things (VW did mine for me) but I can confirm that there is a self-adjusting mechanism on the clutch cable

Good luck!

But there should'nt be... only fitted to euro models LHD i believe, RHD have no self adjusting clutch cable

:?

p.s. superspread, the haynes manual will still help you with the fitting, more or less same procedure to follow, just different looking bits to move out of the way for access (like airbox)

Oh...

Do you think the VW Assistance chap was misinformed then... or did he tell me porky pies... either way mine's not broken any more, which is nice.

Im 80% sure now in that case

LHD clutch cable part is listed as self adjusting

RHD clutch cable is not - manually done by adjusting the nut at the end of the cable in the engine bay

Yeah, I'm pretty sure part of the whole problem with the RHD GTi is the fact the clutch is not self adjusting.

thanks for the replies lads, so if we are saying that its not self-adjusting, do you think all it needs is the bolt losening then adjusting the cable. instead of replacing it? thanks

You could give it a go, loosen it off and readjust to see if any different? it may have become twisted inside, unwind it?

A new one is about £25-30
