Went to VW today for a diagnostics check because my engine management light has been on for several months an been having misfiring problems.
Basically cylinder 1 is not compressing air and misfiring. They say they need to engine strip and i will neeed a new cylinder head. Has this happened to any of you? How much do you think a cylinder head will cost because they are tellin me it will cost £700 + to fix.

that's VW stealers prices though, of course... what age/mark/engine was it again?

i'd hate to think what price it would be to source a cylly head for a modern polo, but getting the thing off and back on again can probably be done at home for "free" (if the right tools are about), excepting the cost of new gaskets, cambelt and head bolts (and some bbq skewers to guide it in if necessary :D) which would be, ooh, about £30 of parts all in.

for an older one you could, if deperate, buy a knacker off ebay that's being flogged because the body's been destroyed with rust, and swap the parts or even the whole engine.

its a mk5 engine tho.im definatly not takin it to VW to get it fixed. im going to get a second opinion and if they say its buggered i might not fix it, instead i might just get a whole new cylinder block, so it will run like a new car again.
