You should try and view this experience as a positive one. Although you almost caused a serious accident by being distracted, the experience will remind you how important it is concentrate on the road and drive responsibly.

When I first got my car dropped I drove around like a f ucking idiot for 48 hours. I almost caused a serious accident at a mini-roundabout after a near-miss with a Ford Ka, but I quickly realized I was turning into the type of irresponsible cockend that drive around in Saxo's and Nova's, obsessed with 'looking cool' and driving like they're always in a hurry. I learned to calm down and ENJOY my car.

Most people on this forum treasure their cars and drive responsibly, but I think its important that people like you and I occasionally scare ourselves sh itless so that we learn to wise up and appreciate our Polo's more

I'd like to think we all look after our cars, but the majority of people enjoy going fast at some point.

I think so long as you do it where it is safe to do so then it's fine

I know what you mean mate, I nearly ended up T-Boning 2 people in the space of about a month, although it would have been their fault.

The first was some old bloke who pulled out infront of me at a mini roundabout with no-where near enough room to do so, luckily I braked quickly and swerved and only hit the curb (on the other side of the road) I was very fortunate there was nothing coming the other way.

The second was the same but at a junction, and was a woman.

Both times, I had priority and they left it right until the last minute.

Just goes to show that old people and women shouldn't be on the road

its maybe not a positive point, but is definately one that u will remember and learn from!
we all make mistakes and we all hopefully learn from them, and that is what makes us better drivers!!

You need to make mistakes to learn.... its hard to get the quick reactions to dodge an accident at low speeds without sometimes driving fast, for instance. This is a positive happening, as everyone's come away intact and you've got some pretty heavy experience out of it.

I've had some similar (if maybe not quite as extreme as "wrong way up the dual carriageway") experiences in my earlier driving years... thank f**k i've cut down a bit
teaching me such things as (mostly erasing assumptions):
* the sliproad might be much shorter than it looks. brake early and gently.
* unfamiliar curves could well kill you through tightness, poor camber and surfacing, if you don't take them very easy the first time
* blind bends are to be treated like a ticking box
* overtaking needs a lot more power than it looks like it does on the telly

Whoops, sorry... That's another lethal lapse in concentration.
Had one myself earlier, got into a motorway trance and was a bit like..... hey, that's a pretty effect with the brakelights of that car in front rushing up t.... * click * OH CRAP! *brake brake brake*

As for the overtaking thing..... it only required me braking pretty much to a halt on the wrong side of the road in order to avert disaster once or twice before the message was driven very firmly home. As a near-incident last thursday proved, even people in powerful audis dont always realise that power is finite and so is the available overtaking time (this time I had to come almost to a stop on MY side of the road... and the yuppie sod didn't even acknowledge a mistake or show any sign of swerving out of the way)

Driving is all about experiances, whether its simple things, near misses, or actual crashes, everyone needs stuff like this or they would never learn.

i've met 2 people coming down a one way road the wrong way! same road same place!

first was a bloke and i told him it was a one way road and he said he didn't realise!
second was a woman......nuff said lol

Learning from your mistakes is best way to become a better driver.

hence why satellite tracking and fining everyone for every little transgression is a really really p*ss poor idea

imagine your childhood if you will where your parents had you on 24/7 CCTV. would have sucked and you'd have grown up an utter gimp
