jsut wondered if anybody had encountered the same problem coming from the engine as me. For some strange reason i hear a funny noise upto around 3000rpm, like a rattling noise from under the engine cover.
Had the cambelt kit done 5 months ago, but it kind of sounds like the belt is rubbing against the engine cover?? is this possible or has anybody had the same thing on their gti??
:(

Is it a ticking noise?

I had this (up to 3.5k or thereabouts) when my cambelt tensioners went.

Not really a ticking noise, more like something is rubbing. But i had the whole cambelt kit replaced 3 months ago :x :(

Who replaced it??

VW garage? take it back and explain the sound you are hearing and have them check their work

it could be your drive belt, VW's are notorious for this, the auxillary drive belt is actually too wide for the pulleys and hence makes a noise as it rubs against them, locate your drive belt, run the engine and spray some brake cleaner on the belt, if the noise stops then you know its your drive belt.

do not spray any lubricant i.e wd40 on it though! it has to be something that does not lubricate, brake cleaner is perfect

it was a local garage.

i though it might be the drive belt actually, i will take the cover off later 2night and have a rummage round :D

i dont think its the tensioners, well i hope not anyway, but it kind of makes sense, the sound goes when the noise of the engine gets deeper. i.e when vvt kicks in, i do hope its not that though

I'd say the sound going away at 3k doesn't relate to the VVT at all. I think the suggestion that it was the VVT is pretty far fetched, you have to listen close to hear the sound of that, and all that sounds like is the engine pitch changing as its taking in more air/fuel.

Usually the drive belt makes a noise when its damp and/or you have left the car for a while. It makes a squeaking noise, a low pitched slow squeak, although that sound dissapears at the revs you speak of. However that is probably down to the fact the car is now making more noise than the belt is.

The rubbing sound you speak of sounds different, do what the others advise and take it back where they did the work.

Please keep us updated, I'd be interested to find out what it is.

I wouldn't drive the car to be on the safe side, if the tensioner goes taking the belt you will have a very large repair bill !

just got the car back, apparently some kind of bearing had gone in the engine, somewhere near where the cambelt is.
All fixed now though :D
