Problem (EPC)

Whilst driving along the other day at a steady speed of between 30 & 40mph I start to hear a very loud squeaking noise. Quite high pitched and very noticeable, even above my stereo. I thought it was another car, until my ERP light flashed on. So i pulled over and the noise stopped. Turned the car off, checked all around & couldnt notice anything dodgy.
Hopped back in & drove home, only 2 mins away luckily & the noise had completely stopped.
However my EPC light has stayed on & I have noticed the noise again, although not to the same extent and just a couple of times.
I Think it could be coming from the brakes but I can't be sure.
Any ideas anyone?
I could take it to VW but bein a student means I have a lack of cash and therefore not really an option.
Just waiting for a friend to get his vag.com CD through too.
Any help in the meantime would be great.
Thanks, Chris

areet mate
I have very squeaky brakes at the mo, starting to grind infact! (thats my bank holiday monday accounted for!! lol!!)
Anyways, my EPC light hasn't come on so i dont think it could be your brakes.
But u can check tho, when you are driving, press the pedal, if the noise goes away then it is probs ur brakes, if it doesn't, then it isn't.
It could be ur alternator belt or another belt, a dodgy pulley or tensioner, it could be anything! Even summit stupid like two bits of trim rubbing together!
I'd get it checked out at a trusted local garage, if you have one in your area mate.

Hi!
I am not sure about the high pitched noise but we had our EPC ligh come on recently. I checked and noticed that the brake lights had stopped working. We bought a new switch for £7, fitted it and lo and behold, the light went out.
CHeck to see if your brake lights work. If not, let me know and I will give you some advice for fitting a new braje light switch as there is a bit of a technique to it and you can damage the switch if you're not careful.
Good luck!

thanks for the help guys. I'm hoping it's the brake light switch as I've just found out they're not working.
Will VW parts be open tomorrow you think? Wanna get this sorted asap!
How easy is the part to replace?
thanks, Chris

Sounds like it's deffo the brake light switch mate if they're not working
Not too sure if they'll be open on a bank holiday, best bet is to just pop down and check.

replace today by VW for free (used car warrenty) yay.
They also replaced my clutch switch for free too aswell - as they said this needed doing. Also Free
but they did say I needed my Clutch addjusting as there is much play in it - didnt have the time to get it done but it is £18 to get done. not sure if to get it done or not. i think my clutch is fine, biting point about half way
