Rattling noise from around hanbrake area

Hi guys, have a really annoying problem just now, around my handbrake area just below there is a very loud rattling noise when I turn the engine on its been progressively getting worse slowly but surely, just wondering what it could possibly be and what could be done to solve it, btw its a mk4 1.4cl 97 cheers guys
