The difference 1.4 Tdi Sport V 1.9 Tdi Sport?

Im looking to sell my Golf 1.8T and get myself a 52 plate polo sport. I'll be needing the car for economy purposes above anything else, however coming from a 1.8T was wondering how much difference there would be compared to the 1.9TDI polo.... and how much behind the 1.4 TDI would be?
Also how much more economical is the 1.4 over the 1.9? Is it worth sacrificing the power for economy?
I'll be doing a lot of motorway miles so am a little worried the 1.4 may be a little lacking?
Any opinions and views much appreciated!
Also anyone interested in a 2001 1.8T golf with Anni kit & lots of other extra's interested in a swap or P/ex please PM me.
Cheers
Tim

There is quite a difference the 1.4 feels a bit gutless through the rev range compared to the 1.9. Around town there's probably not much difference but if your doing lots of motorway driving then the 1.9 is definately the one to go for.
Economy wise there's probably not much in it I average around 55mpg on a decent motorway run in my 1.9 which is good enough for me!

I used to have a 100bhp 1.6 MK4 golf and even though the 1.9 ive got has the same 100bhp it is a lot faster, considering its nearly the same weight as the golf.
Id go for the 1.9 if your on the motorway a lot. Its got a bit more torque and delivers it in a different way to the 1.4,. the 1.4s torque is more spread out than the 1.9 which comes along in a big wave which dies away higher up the rev range. The 1.4 3 cyl also sounds "odd"....

to me anyway..

i have a 1.9tdi ibiza and this has a 6th gear which is very economical on motorway runs!! the best i've head is 68mpg over 150 miles!
around town i find it nippy and economical to boot, usually around 45mpg!!
i'd go for the 1.9 every time!!
i came from a 1.8t leon and its much more economical overall! insurance, tax and fuel!! tax is the same as a 1.2 petrol!!

As everyone's said, if you're doing the miles, get the 1.9. 1.4s don't cost much less to buy, but they're easier to find (perhaps not in Sport trim). And 1.4s sound cooler. 1.9s are just a lot easier to drive - you don't need to go foot hard down everywhere to make it work and as for power dying out further up the rev range, it's nothing a remap won't cure!
Incidentally, my 02 1.9 Sport is coming up for sale if you're interested...
