GTi Gearbox

Just thought i would let you all know my old man works for a gearbox company and the polo gti gearbox is the same as the rest of the polo range its actually ment for the 1.0lt! and as you all know cannot take the qrunt of the 1.6 gti engine!

Little tip guys get your oil changed on the box every 6000 miles an if theres no metal in there your alright! if there is then get it sorted quick otherwise the box case will be a gona soon after to!

full speed off the lights from 0 is a no go in thease cars guys the box just carn't take the torque!!!

Cheers for that info, thats daft that VW did that, you would have thought they would have put the lupo gearbox in or something other than a 1.0ltr box!

means the teeth on the gears have gone if theres metal in the oil you drain out from the box!

if you guys are having trouble getting it in to gear dont force it you just gona do more damage!

without checking your gearbox oil frequently tho you can't tell if your box is ok. if some of the teeth have gone and you carry on driving it not gona last long and it gona go with a bang!

the golf gti's have the same prob! VW boxes are rubbish in general everything else is top notch!!!

Surely if they were going to use the same box they wouldn't have bothered with different suspension and other parts?

Same box, fixed loads upon loads o them! i got a nice few spare now!

why would i lie about that when i a member o the club trying to help you all out! yes the ratios are diffrent but the bearings are the same and its the bearings that go then shag the box!!

Forks and selector shafts are the same on all boxes throughout the range!

Sorry mate, call me stupid but if it's different ratios then it's a different box.

Also, you said it's the teeth that go, bits break off, metal in the oil. So which is it the teeth or the bearings? :?

bearings normally then teeth depends when you pick up on it! the gearbox case is excatly the same in every way just the ratios on the gearing inside thats diffrent! it the bearings that are the killer!!!

If you speak to any gearbox repair place they all say the Polo gearbox regardless of model is the weak spot because of the bearings especially the diff bearings which are the number one cause of a Polo gearbox failing this is because its the same diff in the box regardless of the ratios which are varyed over the petrol models. The Polo GTI puts the most strain on the box due its high torque over a lot of revs compared to the lower power models and generally GTi Polos are going to be driven quicker and harder than the other models, this is way VW changed the Lupo GTI box to a new 6 speed version over the 5 speed.

my gearbox went not that long ago. and needed a new caseing.along with the rest of the box being re built. so the guy fixing it said that he used a 1.0l gearbox caseing cause there are same as the gti but the internals were different..

My first motion shaft bearings went which caused lots of noise. The gearbox fitted to the car was discovered to be a 1.4 16v 75bhp box. The bell housing bolts are in completely different locations on the 8v 1.4/1.6 engines so I'm surprised the 1.0 would have the same bell housing.

The difference in acceleration between the 1.4 16v box and a 1.6 16v are unreal. The gti box is far closer geared and accelerates much faster, which is unusual as smaller engined cars tend to be geared closer.
