Yalreet chaps, I'm sorting my engine bay ready for my new engine and I was wondering.
Im gonna paint the rocker cover and cooling fan surround, now im assuming the rocker cover is going to have to be heat proof engine paint stuff but what about the fan surround? Can I just use regular car paint for this or should that be the high temp paint?

Oh and...anyone wanna sell me a 1.3 engine <siigghh>

the rocker cover does need heat proof paint, i think i would personally use a slightly more robust paint for the fan surround too e.g some sort of heat resistance, not gonna be under alot of heat but may as well be safe for the sake of £2 or whatever.

they also do some engine enamel in fairly snazzy colours on there too incase you wanna paint them in a more adventurous colour

I know samco don't make them but does anyone else? How much are they charging?

hmmm........ i just whacked the thing with loads of fairy liquid and oven cleaner to degrease it, gave it a quick wirebrush then covered it in a couple coats of halfords silver spraypaint. seems to have stuck just nicely and not suffered any heat damage at all. Don't think the rocker cover gets sufficiently hot to bother the paint.

Now, the exhaust manifold cowling, that gets exceedingly warm, enough to smoulder oil drops spilt on it, and had started to slowly flake / tarnish the blue paint i put on it in a similar manner by the time i packed the car on (the fact it was intended for bodywork only, and had no primer, might have had something to do with it... i just wanted to cover up it's ugly rustiness fast)

fan cowling? don't know. but doubt something that's perched kind of around the radiator and fan is going to be any hotter than the rocker cover, that's right over the source of heat (and is the primary splashguard for one of the main cooling mechanisms, i.e. the oil circulation) and has no aircooling of it's own. should be fine also.

Done my last two fan cowlings in smooth Hammerite black. Worked a treat

Rocker cover - do it in some high temp paint. Although not necessary really as the rocker doesn't get that hot

Mind an prepare both surfaces with soem love. The more prep work the better the end result!

despite what i said above i'd definitely back del's suggestion - if you're unsure and it's in the colour you want, use the high temp stuff..... and if you want it to look good, put the work in! my paintjob results have always looked kinda rough and ready because they've been done at quite a rate of knots. make sure you have a good dry shelter to do it in with some ventilation and a lack of dust for starters!

I tihnk it all depends on what type of paint youre using and how youre prepping it. If its something thick and heavy like hammerite for instance it'll go on a treat and shouldnt come off too easily.
