anyone got a trip computer thing in their car?

Just randomly thinking about economy and things again (i'm trying desperately to save this tank from sub-400-mile oblivion again, after charging most the way brum->manc up the m6 at warp speed to "rescue" my bro from the hard shoulder)..... thinking that various of the questions i've tried to figure out in the past by rather drawn out means could be better answered with a simple trip computer as some people have built in these days.
e.g. getting instantaneous MPG readout as you go along so you can instantly see FX of different cruising speeds, gears, etc; average speed across certain journeys; all that bumf
thing is no-one i know has one (other than another uncle who's car i've been in about twice), and though i can do one as a mod in my own, it's apparently a complete pig of a job that involves a degree in electronics.
i'm not even that bothered to start asking for results or anything from folk, just a little bored, avoiding doing "real work" and wondering if anybody actually has one that shows all this info? are they actually as common as all that, or still an expensive optional extra? i imagine it should be pretty cheap these days as it's basically plugging an LCD into one of the ECU's com ports
