Welcome to the forum.
1.4 wise I'd go for the TDI if you want economy or the 100bhp petrol if you want something nippy. Keep a lookout for the rare 1.4 colour concept models (only 300 were made if I'm right) which has cool unique alloy wheels, colour coded leather interior and a rare colour on top of that!

Get a GTi

the insurance isn't too cheap but it's well worth it.
One insurance company you could try is
www.elephant.co.uk they were the only ones that would insure me on the GTi, so they shouldn't be too bad on a 1.4

Elephant or Admiral is best place for insurance. Go to
www.parkers.co.uk if you want more technical information on any car

Wouldnt let that bother you too much, people can give stupidly expensive quotes hoping you won't shop around

Must be because you're female
As well as me, I think there's a few guys insured with Elephant on GTi's on here as they found them to be the cheapest.

Try Norwich Union, I insured my Polo through them for about £500 cheaper than anywhere else would quote me at the time.
Oh and hello.
