thought I tell you lot because we all seem to get the same faults , :D not sure if this be a common fault on all but oh well, I first of all noticed that the fan stopped running on abit after I switched the engine off and when I ve given the car a bit of a blast, then the cooling fan started speeding up and slowing down whilst the engine was running ,even though it wasnt overheating, I traced the fault to relay block , I think that what its called
under the n/s wheel arch, just above the horn, so I removed the multiplugs, they full of water and have corroded the terminals in side,
so if you guys get this fault I check this first, because there doesnt seem to be any cover to protect it from road dirt and water etc, if that any help to anyone :D

Yeah mate, the fan speeding up and down is called 'pulsing'. It's a common fault on Golf MK4's as well.

U have to wonder why they didn't design a better connection.

I don't know if I really get your point,
but as for our raditor fan, it has two speeds, hi-speed always trigger
by turning AC on, or extremely hi collant temperature while traffic jamed.

The GTI's faultly fan has been a known issue here in Hong Kong,
The problem is that the plastic frame inside the fan motor
has melted down, so it jamed the contact pin movements.

Symptom : the fan won't run even temp. above 100 degree, but if
you knock the fan motor hard, it comes on.

Most of our mates have second unit of raditor fan already, I have 3rd unit
though.(from China VW).

I think the original fan motor design is a fault, not suitable for hot
weather.
