Improving the shifting of the gti box??

Hi guys

It may have been discussed before but what can be done to improve the shifting of the polo gti gearbox, -original clutch is still going strong (touch wood) so wont look into upgrading that yet -shorter shifter kit etc??
VW re-alligned(?) the linkage rod a while ago which did nothing. When changing gear it feels like your stirring a bit pot of sticky custard around!
-as if theres a something not tightened somewhere beneath the gear lever (had a quick look but nothing obvious), also sometimes it crunches into 5 gear of which you have to shift spot on to get it in nicely.

Any help appreciated as apart from that its a good little motor,
Simon.

Any excessive play of the shift stick?
while it's in the neutal, check the play (forward/backward),
if it can moves over 1 inch,
then you may need a linkage bush change.

It's located underside behind the gearbox, you'll need to get under
the car to access. It's above the gearbox mount.
