spent many hours today cleaning the polo, took the front seats out to vac, claybar-ed it for the first time, was totally amazed at how much crud was on the paint.....but however I am not happy with the results. I need a stronger cutting swirl remover but other then that it still shines. Being black you can see every little imperfection

To remove swirls you will need either a Porter Cable (PC) or a rotary. VAG paint is very hard and is a right pain in the ass to remove swirls.

Cheers for the advice, I have been using a random orbital polisher, the paint treatment I do is as follows:

Wash / dry (Meguiars shampoo)

Meguiars claybar

Wash / dry (Meguiars shampoo)

Meguiars swirl Remover (Light Cut number 3 from memory, using a foam cutting pad)

Meguiars deep crystal polish (using a wool polishing pad)

Meguiars Carnauba wax

The paint is like glass with a mad reflection, but still there are many scratches

knaps i know this is totally off topic but just wanted to know what the phillips blue vision bulbs are like?

hey, yeah they are really good...much better looking and brighter then the normal globes (side lights can be a bugger to change)

have you also got the sidelights that come witht he bluevision bulbs?
how are they?

I agree with never having a black car, they do look nice when they're clean and then for about 2 hours after, and thats it, back to grey again!

The fact you're using a wool polishing pad may be why you're not getting the swirls out. You'll need a harsher pad for the VAG paint really.

I use Lake Country pads with my Porter Cable, not sure if they're available in Oz? Post some pics of the car up and we'll see how bad it is. If it just general swirling go for a 6.5" pad, maybe a harsher Yellow cutting pad (in Lake Country's range anyway). I tend to use the slightly less abrasive Orange grade pads. If there are more intense scratches/swirls, buy a 4.5" spot bad as well, to attack those specific areas.

Don't think those consumer Meguiars polishes you mention will be good enough either, if you want really top results. You should be able to get hold of their Professional range from somewhere though - it's highly regarded. Personally, I use Mezerna polishes - one coat of Intensive then a coat of Final Polish II when I'm detailing. Then I use Klasse sealant, followed by a couple of coats of Meguiars Gold Class Wax.

My 03 black clio was the same mate. The bonnet was bad in the sun plus after hours of cleaning, take it out bring it back it was dusty and showing signs of dirt.
