Hi all,

I was wondering if it was possible to replace the front speakers in a mk4 polo (1996). I have just bought a polo and the stereo and speakers are a bit lame compared to the standard ones you get in the newer polos (been in a mates one and the speakers pack a little more bass which i like, was quite impressed as they were standard ones too).

So is it easy or possible to do so? also what kind of speakers would fit in the front?

Im not too keen of putting some in the back as i dont want to attract too much attention to the car; ill be at uni in liverpool and we all know what happens there!

I live in liverpool and am currently runnin about £500 of ice!!
Speakers are easy to replace if you can aford to get a good set of components up front. Pop the speaker grills off and have a look what the deal is.

£500 is just getting started

That'll just about cover the cost of my sub and half the wiring

I can see where he's coming from though, I was nervous about putting my first lot in, there's so many people out there who like to get their stuff free from us hard working people.

lol, well its just that a few of my mates have been broken into in the past!! although in the last 5 years that i have been here things havent been too bad!

I dont really wanna spend to much, ill have a look but does anybody know what the size is off the top of their heads? I have an ipod and would like to hook it up too so im not too fussed about having a cd player (although i guess they are standard now!).

you need a set of 17cm (6.5") components for a direct replacement. you can pick up a set of alpine type-r components for just over £100.

The largest difference will be noticed by replacing the head unit though. The standard one cant even supply enough power to get the potential out of the stock speakers let alone some up graded ones.
The standard speakers arn't that bad with a decent head unit powering them (and also putting a propper cros over on them rather than that crappy little capacitor)

all i did mate was change the cd player and put a set of infinity 6x9s in u can tell the difference stright away with a new head unit, try the one i went for the alpine 9850ri which has a ipod adaptor with it !!

get a thin flathead screwdriver, an u simple pop the cover off an the tweeters shud have mabye 2 wee clips u push in then pull the speakers out or use the screwdriver easily 2 do this.

I just got the front grill off the conponents but cant get the tweeter grill off. is there a certain place where the clips are

im not 2 sure, just pull it, if it breaks, i aint responsable, lol

Hi all, been without internet access for two weeks so this is a bit of a revival for the thread!

I like the look of the 9850Ri, but is there anything as good for a little cheaper in price? What about a pioneer head unit?is there much difference between pioneer and alpine?

Also does it have to be component speakers i put in? what about coaxials? Are connecting the speakers to a new head unit easy to do as i have no idea how to do any DIY in a car (bit i want to learn)!!

First i think i will get a new head unit, then maybe speakers later on when i can afford it.

Also what will bass be like with the components? if i wanna add a sub in the future will i need an amp?

Hi all, bit of a thread revivial here...i suppose i could post in the ice section too....anyway...

Im looking for a new headunit @ approx £100-£120 (or even cheaper if there is one available), preferably pioneer. It has to have an aux in for my ipod or any other mp3 device..and play cd mp3s too.

The unit will be connected to the standard component speakers at the front (dont think these need to be amped)

Now i have just purchased a stealth shelf with some infinity 6x9s for £50.

My car currently has no speakers in the back so there is no wiring to the shelf...how would i go about installing speaker wires to the rear of the car?And what kind of speaker wires should i use? Do i rip up the carpet and put the wires underneath?

Should i also amp these 6x9's? If i should amp the 6x9's, what functions does the head unit have to have to allow me to do this? If i dont amp now but i wanted to in the future would it be easy for me to do this now or would i have to rip everything out again and install new wires etc?

I dont want to get a sub so what sort of amp should i be thinking of...2 or 4 channel?i want to get the best out of the 6x9's at the lowest cost possible.

im a complete noob to this but am willing to learn, so any advice would be appreciated. Are there are any easy guides to do such a thing? Sorry if im being too vague! i know what i want to do but have no idea how to do it!

I aint to sure bout these sorts of things but I recently put 6x9's in my car. The easiest way to do it I think is to take your headunit out. Then drop one end of both wires down the back and if done correctly the left and right hand wires should drop out in there respective footwells. Then Make sure they wont fall through and take the wores to the back of the car. I found the easiest way o do this is to tack or sellotape the wires to the rim of the dash under each footwell. Then when you get to the door just push the wires under the black plastic strip. Mines a three door would be different in a five door. Anyway then take it around the seats into the boot(this is the only time I had to lift any carpet. Then clip them to your speakers and pull any slack through so you aint got a load hanging in your boot. BTW dont forget to leave slack for when you open the boot. Hope that helps.
