Hi there, i'm new and have just inherrited my old man's polo gti and am over the moon The only reason this was however was because he's just got a new golf gti and the dealer would only give him 2k px for the polo, which he thought was way too low so thought best to keep it. It's as standard as they come at the moment and i dont want to mod it too much maybe just lower it at first (isnt that how it always starts... ) but first i have a few questions:

Firstly the car has done 100,000 miles!! though my dad has done 60k of them in the last 3 years on the motorway so i know it's had an easy life, and it has a FVWSH. The only thing is the service light is on and is telling me i need an oil change, also on a little thing stuck on the windscreen it says my next service will consist of this also. How much will this cost at the stealers as i'd like to keep up the vwsh, tho if i'm paying an extra £100 for a stamp in the book i'd be inclined to take it elsewhere or do it myself. also if i did it myself, is there a way i can reset the 'oil service due' sign in the dash?

Secondly it can 'clunk' from the rear over bumps, and have been told that it needs new rear ARB bushes, as its had new shocks all round. Are they easy to change? i'm pretty competent with a spanner so don't mind getting stuck in

Finally, i noticed today that the drivers side window made a random a random rumble today when it went down, though has been fine every time after i tried to get it to do it. Just wondered if it was coming out of it runner or if it was a common polo prob?

Apart from these it seems mechanically sound and goes like a rocket, and look forward to driving it another 100k if it'll let me!! great little cars these

TBH as it's done over a 100k now and your likely to put a fair few more on, theres not much point in keeping with the VW service history, youd have to pretty much give the car away to get anyone to buy it (being high mileage on a small 1.6 engine).

Do your own servicing, but write down what youve done and keep reciepts for oil filters etc (this is just as good a service history) even better than just stamps in a book. Stamps mean nothing without reciepts/invoices to go with them.

Bushes can be a right pain to fit, but replace the standard ones with Powerflex ones.

I have just been through all the same queries as you.

Firstly, i would personally keep the history but if you have a close Seat garage go there as they have fixed pricing and it is still classed as FVWSH. I paid £161.00 for my service and that was 120 point check as well as Oil, oil change, air filter, checking my air con pipes and the usual other bits. I did get the cambelt changed by an external supplier though coz they wanted stupid money to do it.

I have just bought 50mm eibach springs from Kally and fitted them yesterday, they are great and look lovely on the original wheels (i will get piccies asap) I highly recommend them. Although the muppet who had the car before me put MK4 golf springs on there so i was wondering why it was such a crap ride, now i know!

Shocks: While fitting my springs we realised the front shocks were knackered so i am just waiting for some new shocks to arrive I bought mine from GSF. £37.00 each +VAT. They are mega easy to change (i'm a woman and am doing it on my own!) I put my old ones back on today. The only part i need help with is tightening the bolts afterwards! ARB bushes shouldn't be that difficult.

My passenger side window fell out of the runner on one side. It is easy but fiddly to fix. Basically, take the door card off, un attach and take out the speaker and the foam bit behind and you can wind the window down and you should be able to see the runner. Unscrew it and fit the window back in and re screw. I believe that the common fault on the windows is the mechanisum, i am correct?

Cheers for the replys guys, appreciate it And think i'll go for the powerflex bushes as i've heard they're often easier to replace than the standard oem stuff (at least it was with fords, don't mention rear beam bushes to me!) nice one DubGTI

Think i'll do this oil change as i can do it for about £25 and am guessin the dealer will want about £80, tho think i'll defo get the 120 point check done at the dealers on the next one. that's not too bad actually! i've heard good thing about the eibachs too, tho is that with standard shocks as ive always thought ya couldnt go lower than about 30mm on standard shocks for some reason? (on any car that is not just polos) Would be great to see pics andrea as mine looks the same as yours pretty much goin by your siggy! I'll have a look at the window on friday when ive got a day off too, doesnt sound too bad to do. cheers for the heads up! Tho have just realised one of my sidelights is out too so am gonna try do that too without removing the front bumper!!
