Since I got my GTI not even 11 months ago it has needed the following (bare in mind it has only done 36,000 miles):

Exhaust bracket welded back on,
A new low tone horn,
Cam belt tensioner snapped so new belt and tensioner,
A new temprature guage sender,
New window motor,
New window Regulator,
Rear wiper motor,
Rear wiper hose,
A 2nd pedel box! My recall box failed,
A new clutch (as VW claimed the heavy old clutch caused the pedel box),
Binding and squeeking rear brakes cleaned,
New front pads and discs,
New starter motor.
Tailgate struts, as my boot wouldnt open fully,
Tailgate open/close sensor.

Add to this a VW service and an MOT and the bill comes to well over £2000.

Does anyone have any idea why the car should have so many problems, it has a full VW service history and has been looked after regardless of cost all its life. It also has a new problem now, a loud buzzing noise coming from the gear stick only in 5th gear that gets louder the faster you go. I think maybe its time to say bye bye to my GTI....

Hmm sounds like you got a bad apple there.

I don't blame you, I'd say bye bye to the GTi if all that happened!

that doesnt sound good at all, has it had a gearbox at any point in its life, becuz they are renowned for going in all the polos espcially the gti's

The items highlighted in red are common issues (presuming tailgate sensor caused by split rear wash/wipe pipe) within GTi owner's circles

As for the rest, I'd agree it seems you have simply gotten a "bad apple" as Chris puts it, I can imagine its a pain to have to have spent £2000 on repairing faults but if you have spent that on the car already, surely selling the car sees that £2000 go with it, effectively? Maybe keep it for a bit and see how things pan out...

Given that the vehicle has a full VWFSH its a bit crazy really! Although... if I were to add up all the bills for work done on my car (repairs, servicing and maintenance, not modifications), it would easily be in four figures

I spent over £1k in 3 visits to VW, although it was on maintenance and not faults.

18th August - Cambelt & Tensioners, MOT and Service, Exhaust Bracket re-welded, Brake fluid change (as part of the service) - £735.64

22nd August - Front Discs and Pads (as picked up on the service) - £244.98

29th August - LED Sidelights fitted - £61.69

I was lucky in the fact that my window regulator and something else associated with it went on Tuesday and my Warranty ran out yesterday, a saving of £315

Only other problem in 12 months was my brake light switch went.

Sounds like you've just been unlucky.

Exhaust bracket, and temperature sensor are common faults too.

I've had my GTI just over a month and covered just over 1000 miles and still have no problems, mechanical wise

what the hell?? that much for fitting sidelights......ummm yeah ok no wonder people call them "stealers" but hey if you got money to burn send some to me

For a car that has only covered 36K the repairs that you have had to carry out on your vehicle are shocking....

mate with your bad luck im surprised the gearbox hasnt gone yet, if I was you I would start saving for a recon one because it will go trust me on that one.

Sounds like you spend too much money on maintaining your car!

61 quid to fit some sidelights. Are you being serious?
Thats a 5 min job if your being slow?

I'd rather pay them to do it, that way if they scratch it then they'd be paying for it to resprayed, if I scratch it then I'm paying for it.
