Why is the GTI so desireable?

Stupid question really as we all have one, but I'm just wondering...in the case of the average reviews it got when it was launched, and the known mechanical faults, why is there such a high demand? The guy I bought mine off of said he had a total of 15 show interest in the car (before and after we bought it). That's insane!

Not too sure to be honest!

But im annoyed with mine now that my linkages have messed up after having my new box in under a week!

Feel like selling it on to be honest, but i know i wouldn't

It's a VW, rare and well spec'd. That's why I brought mine. Thinking in that it was a VW it would be reliable and bomb proof

I beleive that the lupo GTI will become a classic :!: ...the Polo GTI on the other hand will not...due to its reliability issues...

Well said Si. Anyway most classic car owners tend to associate technical trouble as part of the ownership experience

The reason most probably for the GTi being desirable to car buyers or car thieves alike comes down to it having those badges "Volkswagen" and "GTi", which have been in demand since they were first used. Plus there's the whole "oh I never knew they made a Polo GTi" rareness factor.

As for the whole average ratings and "reliability issues" thing, well not everyone reads car magazines or checks stuff on the internet. And due to the GTi's inherent rareness very little is written about it in the first place.

The other more recent thing is the fact that Polo GTi values are fairly low, with some on Autotrader for less than £4k. So it's now not much money for a lot of car, and avaliable to a wider audience.

I think prices for GTI's are still strong compared to the rest of the market. The best way for them to keep their money over time is to keep them 100% std, Check out prices of good std MK 1 & 2 Golf GTI's and Corrados if you want proof.

I'd certainly agree with you on that, I've been looking at MK2 Golf's lately and the premium for mint original ones is considerable.

Samuel: the height of wit there, well done.

looks like he's back again

as for the Polo GTI
well i suppose another factor is that they only made 3 colours, that kind of seals the deal for its desirability :)
