Here we go again about gearboxes in the 6n2 Gti. :(

Does anyone know of any places that a can get a replacement box for ma car, mine is whining like mad, still goes in gear (Touch wood)

Tried all local scrappys in the local yellow pages and even registered for a few of those find a part place with no sucess. :(

The car went in for its mot yesterday and flew through with flying colours at local vee dub specialist (A few advisory's e.g front tyres getting low, brake pads soon etc which i was planning on replacing anyway) :D

They checked out the noise and said its my diff bearings thats gone. :crybaby:
And said it'd be around £600 for a new box then labour on top too, which i said no.
As i only got them to replace it exactly this time last year and they musta put in the wrong one (surely), as theres no way it'll go in 12 months.

The first one lasted 5 years

Any way thats my rant over guys your help would be great.

Isn't your gearbox under warranty then if its just been put in 12 months ago?

Also was the £600 for a new box or a new diff?

If i was you i'd park it up and get it sorted sooner rather then later.

Goodluck finding a box! They are like gold dust!

Cheers man.

No the £600 was for a gearbox.

No the gearbox only had a 6 month warranty i found out yesterday

And i don't think they cost £600 neither (As i look back and think i've been ripped off) Thats why i'm gonna try and source my own, which aint easy.

Ace Gearboxes Ltd
Manual gearbox and axle specialists.

Phone:01604 621731
£475+VAT with a 12 month warranty.
You'll need a mechanic to take your box out, they will then come out and pick up your box, take it back, if there is nothing wrong you don't get charged, but if there is they will either give you a reconditioned one, or recondition your box (thats what happened to me)

They will then bring the box back for you to your mechanic. They are based in Northampton.

Hope that helps

They took my box on a friday, and i had it back on....early tuesday morning if i recall!

However my linkages went all funny after about 4 days...which i found was strange, but i checked my haynes manual and apparently its common after a transmission change, took that in to my mate at the garage and he had it sorted in 20 minutes! so don't worry too much about that if that happens.

You really want to get your own box stripped down and ALL the bearings replaced and the 2nd gear syncro checked (these are bad at going also like the MK2 Golfs).

Most recon boxes aren't recon'd at all they are just 2nd hand from written off cars etc and will at some point end up needing the bearings replaced like the original boxes. If you get your box recon'd it should last at least another 50k. I would also change the clutch whens its off with a sach one which is under £100 from euro car parts.

Another point is that you can't get a new box for the Polo GTI anymore even VW will sell you a reconditioned one ! So if a garage says its a new box they are talking rubbish.
