Where have people got a feed for switched power from? I am not to keen on piggy backing the headunit for other devices.

straight off the battery with the correct fuse in an inline holder (available from halfords, etc)
also make sure you run the correct gauge of cable as well

Running it off the battery wont turn the device off when the ignition is off though.

In my case i use a Nokia Bluetooth Hands Free kit and my phones stays connected to the car when im in the house making calls a bit awkward lol

I never connected the switched power lead to anything when i installed the kit so need to find somewhere to fix it too other than the head unit which i already use for my amp.

Easiest way if you're coming off the battery would be an inline Switch :D

But then its no different from having the off switch on the stereo...

I would get a test lamp or multimeter and test which terminal(s) on the fusebox illuminate it with the ignition on and dont with it off.

It will be the power for things like heated rear screen, headlights etc etc, all stuff that is switched with the ignition. Then run another power cable from the fusebox to the stereo.

I'm going to do the same once i have got my new stereo.

the one for your amp should be the blue one from the rear of the headunit
you can use the red switched live from the headunit for it no problem as it won't be pulling any major ampage from it

Hazards will work even if the ignition is off - I'm trying to locate somewhere other than head unit to piggy back so when the ignition is off the device connected is also turned off.

when you say piggy back do you mean to have 2 wires joined together?
