Well yesterday my car went into the garage for my gearbox.
I must warn you all though that one garage told me i needed a new gearbox which they quoted £700 for !! robbin Bast***ds

!!! Anyway i got a second opinion at another garage who just deal with gearboxes and they said that it wasn't a gearbox i needed, it was the bearings, which will cost me £350! The guy at the garage said that some garages will just say a new gearbox because it's more expensive and easier to replace a gearbox than to strip one down to replace bearings!!!
Don't be fooled by these idiots!!!

Thanks, I'll remember that! Just bought my GTI and its at 57k so I'm considering getting the bearings changed soon rather than waiting for a serious gearbox problem which might result in me having to source a recon gearbox!
Anyone know a good gearbox specialist in the portsmouth area?

Hi Bryony84. I'm new to this site.
I just bought a W reg GTi with 57K on the clock. Is there anything I should look out for before considering replacing the bearings?

Hi ticki!
I'm quite new to the site as well, from reading other peoples posts, warning signs of gearbox trouble seem to be:
whining noises
crunching when changing gear
difficulty changing gear
As far as I know the problem with the boxes is that the bearings get worn down too quickly, which is why people have been talking about getting the bearings replaced before the problem gets really bad!
