Yes it's *another* Polo GTi post, but I thought you may be interested in seeing these "spy shots" I came across.





Check the front seats..... and the rear box.... and it might be a little lower than standard.

It could just be a 9N owner with some aftermarket seats, exhaust and suspension ragging his car round a track

Thats definately not a VW Racing backbox anyway, sits too flush with the bumper. Don't think it looks any lower, think its just the way hes ragging it around that corner

a prototype wouldnt have a registration plate would it? the spy shots i've seen in the past tend to have trade plates or no plates at all.

German proto's need regs, so even new and uncertified cars have reg plates to indicate they're street legal 'Erprobüngsfahrzeuge'. If they're limited to the track then I guess the reg plate can be left behind

Most mules or proto's have regs though.

It looks like a full-equip Polo 16v (rain sensor, sunroof, San Marino's, Navigation System (almost the GPS antenna), chrome grille, etc.)
Any of you figured out what is this white thing next to the headlamp?:

mmmm... It is possible! But as far as I know, the Polo doesn't sell in the US, isn't it?
And side markers have to be only in the front or also in the rear? I don't know this so please correct me if I'm wrong.

It doesn't sell in the US --- yet!! A few have been seen, but people over on vortex seem to think they've just been driven up from Mexico.

Yes, the US need front and rear marker lights... And US Golfs/Jettas have them embedded in the rubbing strips on the bumper sides, so I don't know how realistic this suggestion is. That's why I labelled it "provocative"

In the second pic the brake caliper does look pretty close to the outer edge of the alloy on the front, is that std size?? There again could be uprated aftermarket ones

I don`t look the 1.6 badge on the front grill.

And I don`t look a back brakes discs

The first letters are something like a county (but much smaller than a county) BS is a city called Braunschweig (engl.: Brunswick), it's not so far away from Wolfsburg (where VW is from).
Could it be that this car is just from a "Tuning" company from Brunswick?
Normally VW cars have "WOB"...

OK, here's a thought.

Col's noticed the brake caliper positioning on the picture. I concur. Bearing in mind that it's on san marinos, there's no way those brakes could fit on a standard polo.

Now, reading the above post (this 4 motion thing is mentioned elsewhere on that site aswell, but never in any form other than speculation), and noting that the standard MKIV Golf 4 motion / TT has 312mm front discs (according to uk-mivs.net), could this rumour actually hold water???? (i.e. VW just lifting their existing 4motion/1.8T package and shoe-horning it into the polo shell?). We already know that the hubs are straight off the MKIV4 golf (i.e. standard current-generation VW pcd etc).

Anyone with San Marinos care to measure their inside diameter? Anyone know what the disc diameter is on a standard Polo?? Deduct "a bit" for the caliper itself and that number could prove or disprove this rumour. Also if you look really, really closely at the rear wheel you can see a few cms of disc peeking out (particularly through the centre of the "horizontal" spokes to the right of the hub) -- that disc's also larger than anything I've seen currently on a polo. I think.

(Of course, it might just be someone's personal polo being thrashed round a track....)

This is a massive shot in the dark but...

...the 16v badge. Could it be

1) A Cover up?
2) An update of the 16V 1.4 engine (perhaps part of the GT range). With uprated brakes/new exhaust system to differentiate from the smaller engined models.

Just a thought, though I don;t wish to lead people off the track

Hmmm.... Possible. Although VW don't really have a "back to basics" school of thought at the moment...
