If your going for an engine conversion, wouldnt it be more worth while going for a 20V 1.8T or something? Just a thought.

1.8t and vr6 have both been done. can't see why you'd put an 8v 1.8 in there instead of a more modern engine?

I can:

1) cheap
2) can do it yourself with less mechanical know-how
3) ecu and wiring can be ditched easier - if you carb it instead
4) easier to source cheap parts!
5) someone might have one free for you!

and so on - in fact if you got a written off 8v GTI there's a lot of parts that just might fit.....

but i don't know which! all I know is a 20v lump would cost about 4k to put in

The guy is obviously considering the 1.8 8v as he is on a relative budget! I'm pretty sure he would go for the 20vT if it was thaty easy and cheap.

I personally think you should go for a more modern engine tho, 1.4 16c 100bhp engine or something? Its meant to be really quick. Or say the GTI engine from the 6n2? Not very expensive.

I dont really know the power of the older GTI engines etc, but i would assume they'de be quite nippy and light, but imho it would prob deppreciate the value of the car due to the engines age and more than likely high mileage.

just my 2p's worth tho.

If you've got the engine handy then bang it in, not really sure what you'd need to do it but i bet good money it would fit as 1.8t's 2.0l 16v's and VR6's have all gone in.

Getting the 1.8 8v engine in would probably be quite easy due its smallish bulk and you'd end up with a very light and torquey car

It will physically fit, but thats about it. You'd have to adapt the mounts from both a polo and a golf together. The mounts on a mk2 golf are completely differant. They are nice engines for acceleration but top end isnt much. You may need to cut the chassis legs to allow fitment, also i dont know what box/driveshafts you could use. The Polo engines are based around the 1.1/1.3 mk1 engines where they have a short block. The mk2's have a long block. It may be worth looking at a 1.3 mk2 and comparing the mounts with a gti. That way you could see what was needed.

I'd go for a 6n2 gti engine. You could get one for a few hundred and it'd go straight in.

i imagine all the bits of a 6n2 will fit a 6n without too much bother to be honest. the more 6n2 parts you can pilfer the better!

Might even be easier if you fit a 6n2 dash while you're there? Now that would be sweet 8)

not havin a go mate if it sounded like that, its just that the 1.8T is most of our dream engines and the price is prety much which stops 99% of people doing it to be honest!

But yeh Gti brakes will go on easy! A 6n2 dash conversion would be sweet, but in al fairness, if you would want all this from a 6n2, just get a 6n2 :D
