i have a '89 1.3 (40kw) cl polo, bought with 4 months mot an tax for £45. not a bad runner but i do have some problems, i hope someone out there can help me!
first, my fuel gauge doesn't work apart from looking at the fuel tank and finding what look like two loose conectors (which dont fit together [both female]) i have no idea where to start.

Second, i have problems when starting, unless is keep tapping the accelerator (very quickly) the car stalls (has auto choke)

one more thing, does anyone else have a really rattly exaust? from about the mid section, cant see the prob but open to suggestions!!!
thanks
Andrew

When i changed my exhaust myself I forgot to put the metal braid thing back on. Anyway it used to creak a bit from below the gearstick area. It was vibrating against the bracket. Had to adjust the position abit to get it right.

Mine was loose when I hit a speed bump and it lossened the clamp up near the manifold. Where the rear box loops on (it's not a very good set up) if the two rubber rings that keep it in place are worn it may allow more free play also.

Your autochoke sounds dodgy, either that or the tickover needs set.
I did have a similair problem until last year when I discovered that I was getting dodgy petrol, I turfed in some fuel system vcleaner and started to buy petrol elsewhere and that sorted it.

thanks for the exaust ideas guys, i'll have a go tomorrow.
what fuel cleaner would i need? carb or injector? i have the 40kw 1.3 looks like it's a carb but seems to pick up like an injection
thanks again.
if anyone can help with fuel gauge ideas you could stop me running out all the time (too poor to fill the tank!!)
Thanks again!!

I use Lucas fuel system boost (tune up in a bottle) it's about £5 for a bottle but great stuff, although after rereading yourpost it must be a faulty autochoke.Make sure everything is connected up to carb and that all wee hoses etc are connected, especially the big airduct type hose that goes from the air cleaner down towards the manifold.

As for fuel gauge is there nowhere you can see on the tank for the wires to go? I'll go out to the garage and check to see exactly where the gauge is as I can't remember
