gearbox oil, what is it?

please help I am just doing the clutch on my polo, and I ve drained the gearbox oil looking for bits in it, lucky me it was of clean , 
so no new gearbox for me ( still on number two), but I thought whilst I am there I change it, I know I need 2.7 litres of gear oil but not sure what type ep80? I ve asked the local dealer but he only sell me his own for 4 quid a litre +vat, and I ve already been shafted for a new lower gearbox mount 50 quid from them, many thanks
