HI EVERYONE!!...IM SO HAPPYYYYYY!!!!!! GOT MY MOTOR ON THE ROAD....READY TO THRASH SOME VTR'S!. .(ok enthusiasm dies down now!!, got a few minor issues)... OK, to begin with my car is a silver 2001 polo gti, it has just 16500 on the clock!!, anyways ive noticed a few things, one of which concerns me greatly...

Firstly.. the fuel cap, the bit in which the metal piece goes into, in order to lock the fuel flap is broken. Hence the fuel flap is loose...just to clarify, im actually talking about the fuel flap itself, it is grooved for the metal piece to slide through...its broke (plastic bit), do i need to replace the fuel flap, if so do i go to dealers for it? wouldnt it be a colour mismatch if i did?

Secondly, my horn....doesnt work....whenever i press it, theres a click, ( i dunno im guessin a relay), but no noise from the horn...how do i deal with that??.....

Finally the most worrying of issues is the gearbox...im hoping im just paranoid!!( been dreading the gearbox issues!!), but when i put it in gear it doesnt feel as if its in fully...i.e i feel i have to push it in firmly to make sure its in gear properly for fear it might pop out...as ive made it make that gut wrenching, crunching noise, if i change gears to casually...<<<is that the symptons for a knackered gearbox....or im i just overly worried.....
I would be extremely grateful if i can gather any thoughts from you all on any of the problems ive mentioned...thanks alot!!....

i cant help you with the fuel flap or horn,

But gearbox since ive just had mine done. The crunching is a bit concerning is it certain gears? or all of them. Mines was just 2nd and 3rd that were crunching really bad. if there is any whining it could be your bearings need done and a clutch or even a clutch cable. just dont push the gearbox to hard i.e racing vtr,s. if the gearbox does go pop when racing one then its a lot of money just for a vtr,s sake. My gearbox its really smooth now and im being nice and easy with it,it feels like a new car.

hi there, slight misunderstanding i think... theres no whining of any sort, but its just when i put it in gear casually, sometimes it doesnt quiet sink in and hence makes that crunching noise ( the noise which indicates that its not fully in gear).. ive noticed gear 1 and reverse gears are the ones i have to extra careful that it actually went it, im hoping its nothing significant, but it just feels alittle odd compared to my ex, fabia.. thanks mate,

I have the same problem. Everyone thinks I can't change gear because of it sometimes

I've heard that reverse can be a bit funny to get into as theres no synchro. So you have to be a bit patient with it and do it slowly.

The other thing i've noticed with my gearbox (not sure if its relevent), is that when it is in 4th gear (and only 4th) the gearstick jumps very slightly if you have your hand on it you can feel it. it happens when you press the throlttle down and then jumps back when you ease off. Its only a slight movement but I thought it could be a sign of gearbox knackeredness!

@ NAZPOLOGTI

The fuel flap wont caus you much of a problem as the metal spike only locks the fuel flap when the car is locked, so unless your nervous about someone syphoning your fuel one night, then it shouldn't be a prob, but yeh if it does p*** you off, go to the dealers, get a new one and get the appropriate colour to spray it.

Cant help you with the horn.....is it a standard steering wheel??

As for the gearbox, nah your not having any probs. My new gearbox still crunches if i'm too casual with it  but like thedees1 says, if it starts one whyning, get it checked asap!! 1st and reverse are notoriously pricks fro gears

@Bryony84

Mines does EXACTLY the same as yours. Jus in 4th gear, touch the throttle and it jumps forward a wee bit, off the throttle and it jumps back.......mystery to me like, but i seriously doubt its a problem because it done it on my previous gearbox and my current one. :D

The 4th gear "hiccup" is a known issue and isn't harmful at all. Wierd though isn't it, with care you can find the point on the gas pedal where the gearlever jumps, then move it back and forth by modulating the throttle pedal  little things... ;)

My gearbox only crunches in any forward gears if I have been careless enough to not depress the clutch right the way to the floor. Doesn't happen too often after three years of ownership :D

Cheers

Good to know other peoples gearboxs do the same, I can breathe a sigh of relief now as theres nothing else unusual about my gearbox at the moment.

Guess its just one of those funny little characteristics of the car!

Hi, just read the symptoms of what you thought could be the gearbox.

I think it could be you pedal box as the symptoms seem to be the same as I had. I could hardly change gears when my pedal box decided to start going. If it has gone it should be replaced under warranty as it was a recall.

Hope this helps

hi again, i'll check out the fuse!! thanks for that.....sorry im alittle confused with regards to the recall, does that mean volkswagen fix the pedal box free of charge, i havent got warranty on the car, doesnt that mean i have to fork out for it...if so, whats the damage  ? cheers

It was a recall so they have to do it for free. You can check if you've had it done either by ringing the dealer and asking or if you lift the carpet in your boot, there should be a small sticker under there.
