The Polo GTI was in a Top Gear in a hot hatch episode where they had a shot out off all of them however it ws quickly eliminated without much of an explanation, if I remember the Ibiza Cupra did a bit better though. The Clio Sport and Saxo VTS came out tops.
I still think even today the Polo GTi is still a very good looking car and spec wise (climate/xenons etc) its spot on. Would have been perfect a little lower on 16" BBS alloys with a 1.8T under the bonnet ! That would have stopped the gearbox/pedal box and tensioners problem in one go aswell.

the car is damn light..a 1.8T would make the car go sideways!, i'd definately buy one!. imagine the 0-60 time!. Dave do u remember which episode it was???

Not sure it was a long time ago as the Ibiza Cupra had just came out which was I think Y/51 Plate so going back to 2001.

vicky butler henderson did a test drive on fifth gear sometime ago remember seeing it .
