Polo 1.9CLD - I need Help!

I am at my wits end. I bought this nov 1998 diesil polo 2 months ago. All fine and dandy. Bought Alloys, Kamei grill, lowered it, front indicators and repeaters and it looks quite well.

After driving to Co Derry (Northern Ireland) on the motorway, the oil light and a buzzer came on flashing for about 10 secs. Panicked pulled off the motorway and called my father.

He came up and picked me up on lowbed trailer and took car home (100 miles away)

Brought it to a local garage and they looked at it, drove it hard and assumed that it was the oil pressure sensor. So they ordered a part from VW but it was the wrong one - the temp sensor.

After I got it back i replaced the temp sensor anyway and it seemed to do the trick.

Then 2 weeks later without any furhter warnings light came on in exactly same place. So i rang the AA and they towed me to Volkswagon in Belfast.

They put a pressure tester on it and said that the oil pump was working okay and the car was puting up presure okay, so it must be either electrical and gave me the proper sensor.

Then today after replacing the sensor the car reported the same problem ( i was driving about 75mph M2 @ 2700 - 3000 revs)

I need help cos if it happens again then Im goin throw it in the tide or burn it out with a match. I leave it unlocked in belfast hping theives will steal it - only jokin!

Hey Mick :D

I thought about this, and could it be that the sensor is actually fine, but the wire(s) leading into it are broken somewhere?

If the ECU gets no signal from the sensor (due to a broken wire) it could assume that pressure's gone and it subsequently raises the alarm.

Just a thought.

Bloody Oil Light Went Again!

Speedlaw the same thing happened today.

I had to get the AA to pull my Polo to the Volkswagon Garage in Belfast!

The AA said that there are two pressure switches on Polos - one that operates at pressure <= 2000 rpm and the other that operates >2000rpm.

They also said that there is a diode behind the dash that controls a pressure sensor.

They checked the pressure sensor that i replaced and it worked fine which means that the problem is elsewhere, either behind dash or this other mysterious sensor

Its driving me mad and couldn't happen at a worse time. = Christmas!

So its booked in for a csotly diagnosis of what the problem is but i know it will come back with nothing sorted because Volkswagon are not very good at repairs and parts for older cars,

They think that if it doesn't happen when they start it up and rev the engine up then it ain't broke!

Annoying!

I know all about mysterious and 'unsolvable' problems... Electronics can be a right PITA. Hope that diagnosis yields some results!

AS far as I am concerned I have found out more info than VW in Belfast know! They are not very good and wanted to replace the sensor - when me, the AA and possibly VW know that the sensor is working perfectly.

Not impressed with the Volkswagon service, (but hey the cars are still great)

Agnews (Belfast VW DEalers) rang me today and said that the fault lies at the back of the dashboard and that they have to order me a new dashboard cluster that will cost £457.00 but since im signed with the AA and it was them that towed the car in, the AA are payin for it!

All I have to pay is a £25 Excess fee!

Thanks for your help everyone!

(I wonder if they could put a Golfs SDI Dash into the POLO? - Blue light conversion)

not really!! :) but there are ways to convert the green to red and blue. I didn't think the dash would be that dear??!! But who cares if the AA are willing to pay for it!!

i always wondered if the mkIV Polo GTi cluster would fit in the polo MkIV as its was giving the 'blue dials' treatment, but wasn't ever launched here in the UK. Down side would be that the display would be in Kilometers.. but hey. i could live with that... just need to source one i suppose...

Col they said that the Dash isn't really that dear but they have to Calibrate it t all the gauges like oil , temp revs and speed.

I thought it would just be plug and play but its outta my hands, i'll just let them get on with it.

How much would converting from Green to blue / Red cost for my POlo?

all they have to do is plug and play and rid a few faults maybe, thats all they can do!! The clocks reset themselves when plugged in!! But as u say who cares as long as its all paid for!! 8)

Converting from green lit dash you'll need parts that are scrappy only options really like red pointers from Mk4 Golf and passat for the oil and temp guages. I ended up cutting up most of the insides to get it to work!! so don't think it'd be the best idea until you find out if your new dash fixes the problem!! :) Have been thinking of other options but have yet to get the bits in, it should be a lot easier and your clocks could be returned to std unlike mine!! And a lot less hassle!!

And the Mk4 GTI dash should fit into '98 on cars just KM dials and trip computer, but maybe can be changed with VAG COM not sure, was over £200 last time I enquired through the stealers, I'm sure Martyn could source one cheaper??

Well VW rang me at 4.00pm today and said that they have ordered the wrong part and now the dashboard is all in KM/h. Its really pissing me off now (sorry for language) but that is the 3rd time they have ordered a part and its been wrong one.

Belfast VW must employ monkeys in their workshop or something.

Anyway I have to pick it up tonight and then bring it up again on Friday to get the right part fixed in. God knws how long that will take!

Just loadsa hassle for something that could have been sorted months ago!

Sorry about me cryin like a bit*h!

It helps to vent. I've had steam coming out the ears quite a few times now (mostly VW dealer related) but, fortunately, it wears off after a while.
