Ok, here's the story....

On my Mk 4 1.0L...

About a month ago, I suddenly found it was difficult to get my polo into gear. But it seemed to sort itself out and I forgot about it. She's been sitiing outside my house for 5 days over christmas, and when I came to drive her to work the gears played up again. It's so difficult to get into ANY gear, third's worse than the others but I'm really worried. We're talking sudden change, from fine to now my arm hurts trying to change gear!!!! Havent noticed any change in the clutch. She was serviced this time last year by my ex, so I'm not sure if he changed the gear box oil... But if it was just that, would it have changed so suddenly?

Please help!

Has there been any grinding at all? When engaged have you noticed any unusual noises? Is there a mat stopping you from fully depressing the clutch?

It may be that the clutch cable needs adjusting. When it was driving OK did you notice if you had to fully depress the clutch to change the gears?

If this is the case the clutch cable may have stretched over time and just needs re-setting.

There's been no grinding or other noises at all. Really weird. I checked the clutch but it depresses fine, not catching on my mat. The clutch doesn't feel any different to normal.....

sounds more like a clutch, as it's happening in every gear and you haven't mentioned any problems driving once in gear.

worth taking to a garage for a proper diagnosis.

If it hasn't been serviced for a year, it's probably time to have another one done.
