help with gear knob please!

I have a mark 4 v reg 1999 polo and i just bought a new gear knob, but i dont know how to take the old one off. can anyone tell me how to take it off please?

Correct me if im wrong...
pull up the gaitor (elasticated at the base) there will be a silver/gold ring round the gearknob unit at the top, take this off and should pull off.

i had trouble with the gear knob on my mk4. the rubber gear knob broke off. so i would suggest cutting the top off. this allows u to prise the clips and jiggle it off. any help???

cheers yea that did help.
yea thats why i got the new knob because the plastic bit keeps falling off.
I found the gold ring but i can't see how you take it off.
how do you do that?
