Hi All,
Just got a 2003 1.4 16v Sport (5 doors).
Quiet and responsive (for a 1.4).
Avergaing 32 MPG in town; 45 mpg on motorway. Thrashing it get's it down to 27 mpg
So far so good.
Question about the for this model: Should this car have had rear door speakers ?
It did not have a VW Radio/cassette but some crappy aftermarket one that just does not go with this car. When I bought the car, I knew I would replace it with an authentic VW brand. The rears doors speakers did not work.
I took the non-VW radio out and to my horror I found out why the rear door speakers did not work. It appears that there are NO WIRES in the car for rear speakers !
The brown connector on the end of the wiring loom only has 4 wires on pins 3 to 6 for Front Left & Right pairs (I guess). The other pairs for the Rear Left & Right are completly missing.
Does this mean the car is NOT wired up for rear speakers ?
Can it be done ?
Never mind the wires, do the speakers exist ? (difficult to tell even though the grills are there) ?
Thanks.
PS. Photos coming

If you look in direct sunlight you can see though the grills, also try shineing a torch through?
I not samiliar with vw's headunits, but i'd imagine that rear speakers would be possible, i know mine has about 6-8 !

Welcome to the forum
As far as i know, the 1.4 16V's should come with rear speakers. For the speakers there is a speaker grille below on the rear doors (like the fronts) If you dont have this then you probably didnt have them factory fit.
The grille on the middle of the door card AFAIK is on all whether there is speakers or not - think it houses the tweeter for Polo's with speakers.
Speakers are fairly easy to wire through but if you dont have the housings on the doors you'd probably have to cut away the door cards to make them fit, or fit them onto your parcel shelf

Thanks for the warm welcome !
Checked the rear doors. Yes there are grills molded into the door panel. Pointed a torch onto the grill as suggested by chris4500uk. From what I can see, there is round cut out in the metal panel and it appears to be sealed with something black and flat (not a speaker I think

).
So it looks like I have the hole there for the speaker and now need to figure out the wiring to the head unit.
Anyone have an idea how I should be looking to pay for wiring the rear door speakers ?

BTW, when I lifted rear seats, there's a small bundle of wires (may 4 or 5) on both sides. They come up from the floor of the seats and are routed to go into the sills. Could these be for the speakers or are they for the electric windows that I have in the back doors ?
I would have preferred to have the speakers than the electric windows in the back

hello and welcome.
Are you sure you have a sport model? cos there is a 1.4 16v engine that doesnt come in sport trim.
The sport came with standard front and rear speakers.
get some pix up

it looks like sport model to me... fogs, wheels, cc'd bits, 16v badge
and those wires lead to the petrol tank and the boot i believe, defo not speaker wires.

Wierd its not got speakers. Mines 2003 and does have rear speakers fitted as standard!
Yours does appear to be a 'Sport' though, whats the engine code? (should be three letters in your service book sticker behind front cover) that will tell you exactly whether it is a sport or not

Thanks, AM.
Here's a photo of the sticker. There are lots of 3 letter codes
I recognise the '9N' but what do all the others mean ?
Is there an easy decoder of these code somewhere ?

It should say it along the side of the manual but thats all your seat fabric e.t.c.
BBZ is your engine which is the 16v Sport engine and GEX is your gearbox code.
So your car is the 16v sport
