vag com issuesssss

hi all,...have been struggling with this for weeks!!! 
i installed it and stuff, plugged the usb into my laptop and the other end into the car,(the little green LED appears on the cable) installed that too (the connection)..and when it comes to testing and saving the com port, that works too. its when i go to select control module, then choose the first option "engine", it opens the screen, then that little box at the top, where it says please wait 3.5 then 2.5 etc...struggles for a bit, then a little box appears saying " no response from controller", ive tried everything i could, i.e engine on, engine off, iginition on, iginition off, restarted the laptop several hundred times, still no luck...any ideas??? cheers
