Just had the guy on the phone, it's gonna cost £1200 for everything

The passenger Xenon has water in it because of the seal so it's screwed up the whole unit so that needs replaced. The timing belt involves 3 seperated belts and the water pump which costs £400. Rear discs also need replacing.

Not happy with my car doing this to me, especially considering I owe my parents £400 for the car, and only got paid £500 today meaning I'll be £1100 in debt, excluding insurance that is due in April

Where on Earth have you put this in For It To Get Done ? Just Been looking on Euro Car OParts, and they have a water pump at £17.60, Thats for a 1.4, i really cant see how the hell it could be near £400 ! Never Knew the Timing Belt to Have 3 Belts, I'm Sure You could get all the Parts For less than You Stated the Water Pump, I think there trying to Fiddle You Mate !

It's at my local VW specialist which has a very high reputation. Didn't take it to my local VW garage due to past experiences

the £400 quote is for his cambelt swap, part and labour I assume? - If that includes a water pump as well then that's a pretty good price for a VAG dealer. The kit comprises 2 tensioners, a roller and 2 belts and a bolt.

edit: typed this at the same time as you were! - VAG specialist, but if he's using all OEM parts then it's not going to be much cheaper than a main dealer

I'm Sorry But i Still Wouldnt Pay That ? You could No Doubt Get The Items Half the Price ! And they Do the Same Bloody Job

Yeah he said £400 for belt and water pump inc labour. £90 for a Xenon Bulb if the old one doesn't work, £200 for the headlamp unit. Trying to get my head round the rest, gonna phone him just now again

my local VAG dealer quoted me £380 for a cambelt swap - the kit is about £110, the rest of it was labour!

bought the kit and got a mate to fit it for beers

sounds about right, perhaps a little steep for a specialist as opposed to main dealer.... doesnt account for the other 600 quid though.....

Right was gonna be £60 for an oil change so I cancelled that. I'd do it myself if I had proper ramps plus got it done for £45 before inc labour and oil.

Total is £1162.07 including all labour at 42.50/hour + VAT and it's gonna be 8.5 hours work. That works out £424.49.

Other costs he gave me:

- around £400 for belts including water pump and labour
- £163 for headlamp
- £99.03 for the bulb (this will only get ordered if the old one won't work)
- £100 for air con re-gas
- £15 pollen filter
- £15 anti-freeze
- £80.1 for rear discs and pads w/10% discount
- £12.50 for brake fluid
- £50.30 for MOT
- labour for everything other than belts = £227.14

Phew!

edit: worked that out as 4 hours work for the belts and 4.5 hours to do everything else
