OK, I'm looking for a 3dr TDI sport 100 for less than 8k.

Got to be less than 60k and about 4 years old, I do a lot of miles and therefore over 60k would be a bit of an issue.

I can't work out what's good and bad - Parkers say 6,300 for an 03 with 30k on the clock... but I hate those guides.

I have 2 possible cars

1) 53 plate with 11k on the clock - 7750
2) 03 plate with 45k on the clock - 7000

and there was also one for sale here - an 02 with 28k on the clock for 6k.

these seem very different from the book price, but what have other people experienced? have prices gone up recently? what would I expect to pay for option (2) - 6500?

advice appreciated!

The dealers and garages always add extra on top of what the car is worth as:
1) Want a larger profit
2) Also they have to cover costs of the anything to the car before its sold i.e service, valet
3) Dont want to have to have the hassle of sending it through the auctions.

I brought a my TDI Sport 5dr with 50k through the car option at work and paid less than auction price. If i had gone through the stealers it would of been 7000. I never use parkers guide i use the buyers guide on the aa website as it uses the Car Aution Price guide that all the motor industry use. Its says 6750 for option (2) from retail and 5550 for clean trade price.

If you do go for it always haggle set a price that you want to pay and go a couple of hundered under it or if they dont move on the price ask from bits to be chucked in tank of fuel, mats.

With the prices they arent moving much at the moment due to new reg they might drop this month becuase there will be more vehicles than demand. But the end of each quarter is best time to buy from dealers or garages because they want to meet sales targets and will try and do anything for a sale.

thanks for the info

for what it's worth option 2 is private and option 1 is a dealer. I'd guess a stealer would ask for at least 300 more than the equivalent private

thanks for the help!

edit: so I guess the plan is to explain a dealer would have the car up at 6750, and offer her 6,400

will let you know how it goes!
