stiff gear change and some info on spoiler!

ive got a 2001 gti thats done 17,500 miles, when i go to put my car into 3rd and 4th gear it seems very stiff?? does this mean i need to take it in to have the gear box checked out cos theres seems to be alot of u gti owners experiencing gear/clutch problems!
on another note my spoiler is going in on the 17th to be resrayed because its got lots of air bubbles under the paint! when i booked it in for the job i got told thet it was the 3rd polo gti to have this work done in the chelmsford vw bodyshop, any1 had this problem??
