Gearbox has just gone - bearings as usual, it has done 58000 miles. Needs a rebuild or a recon box- which shall I go for? Have had a quote for a recon box including fitting for £495, with a 12 mth guarentee, this seems to be pretty good.

unlucky, sorry to hear that. Seems like a fair price going on what I've read on this forum.
How did the box go? Was it whining for a while before it or did it just blow up? Mine has scrapey sounds and whines a bit, think it's on the way out too.

You would be better to get your box rebuilt, the recon boxes are generally nothing more than 2nd hand and likely to go quicker than having yours rebuilt, just make sure if its getting rebuilt they replace all the bearings in the box.

The sound started off as a low pitched whine or rumble- thought is was a wheel bearing. It has gradually got louder and louder, you can notice it most when you are slowing down in 2nd or 3rd gear, can't hear a thing at high speeds.
