MkIV 16v Gearbox!

I am having trouble with my 6n 1.4 16v. I've had it four years; it's a 99T with just 65K on the clock. It was returned to me after extensive repair work last week. What started as an overheating problem, snowballed into something much worse. The cam belt, clutch, head gasket (including skimming), water pump and thermostat were all replaced. The gearbox was repaired, as it was leaking oil and the garage couldn't get a second hand one. They were not 100% confident about the gear box repair, as the case is cracked -but they felt it would hold together. The cost of all the work was over £900.

The car runs better than it has for a long time now, but there is a problem. I noticed this as soon as I left the garage last week. The speedo doesn't work. So, the car went back to the garage on Friday. It turns out that the speedo sensor has dropped to bits. This, it would seem was the cause of my gearbox 'crack'. It seems that part of the sensor flew out of position, and flew through the gearbox casing!! The car is driveable, but without a speedo, it's making me nervous. Especially around Gatso cameras!! They're not able to do anything to fix the current gearbox at the garage, they are very reputable and reliable, so I trust them on that.

Therefore I need a new gearbox. I have a few questions. The think the code for mine is 'CWX' -does that sound right? Is this the only 16v gearbox code? Am I right in thinking that 'DJX' is also a 16v gearbox code? Are these two gearboxes the same? I had heard that the CWX boxes were only fitted up until ’96. Does that mean my car is older than the ’99 reg suggests?

As the gearbox case is cracked, I can't trade mine in for a reconditioned box. It looks like going to breaker's yard is the only sensible option. The garage has said that if I can source a gearbox, they will do me a very good deal on fitting it. What would be a sensible price for a gearbox, from a breakers yard? Browsing the forum gives me the impression that this is a common problem, and 16v gearboxes are hard to source.

Are there any other VAG gearboxes (newer) that would fit my car, that would be as good as, or maybe better than the CWX? I've considered a box from an 8v, but the ratios are not the same, and apparently the 16 valve engine eats them up.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

as far as i knoe AFH is the 16v engine code for 6ns, so the same for gearbox! i have heared of people using 1.6 glx gearboxes from a 6n for better ratios, but call round you area or use yell online for gearbox reconditioning places, and they'll have a reconditioned one themselves, or will recondition yours!
thats what i did when my gearbox went!

I have found some information on the erWin website, my 'CWX' box is a '085C' -as are CJC, DXJ, FHX, FFM, FFL, ETC, ETB, DXM AND DSP. These boxes were also fitted to Lupos. I noticed on the website that 085B, D and E boxes were also used. Does anybody know if these are 16v boxes? If so, are these different in any way?

How does £240 including VAT and delivery sound? The box is second hand with 45,000 miles on it. Is that expensive?

sounds very good, specially including delivery! make sure it matches the box you need tho!
all you need is a quote on fitting! probably another £200-£250!
get a new clutch while you are at it, no more fitting costs, as its out anyway, and the part will only be like £50!

Straight from ETKA, these are the standard boxes fitted to the 16v:
