Thinking of upgrading the system with a new headunit and also replacing the 2 front door speakers. I know its not a 'proper' system, but just wanting your views on these.

Pioneer headunit (DEH-P3900MP)

Quoted for £200 inc fitting.

personally I'd stick with the standard HU and buy an 2nd hand amp and brand new component speakers for £200. A genesis profile 2 amp you can pick up for about £100 and they're superb and discrete.

that way you retain the nice OEM look of the dash and get some proper performance. you can use a pre-out from the HU or get a converter I do believe.

I would think that that setup wouldn't produce anything nice sounding and would actually be quite harsh on the ears. you really want to aim to keep the tweeters where they are and the woofers low down.

just my 2p mate.

In my opinion much better sound quality you will get in a alpine HU and Helix/Infinity speakers. As David Burton said try and get a amp it is a big difference

Ye i was of the opinion that just amp the standard HU, but my HU gave up on any attempt to do that, plus i wanted the freedom of having a 6 channel equaliser to ensure the best sound possible. I upgraded to a Blaupunkt Acapulco MP56, which retains a factory look with a load of snazzy features, an alpine T220 250W amp, and fusion encounter component speakers :D

Cheers,

Alex

but there's a budget of £200 I guess, which rules out many options.....

Well the amp was £89, the speakers £50, and the HU was £100 plus cabling and what not about £40 and I fitted it all myself - fitting would be about £60ish

So a grand total inc fitting is umm about £340 ish. Slightly over budget :P

nice HU tho, I was thinking the Helix speakers mentioned above would be pricey!
