Car Not Starting (sometimes)

Hi all,
Having a problem with my car at the moment it seem's to have an intermittent problem,
For instance just today I stopped off at a mate's house to drop off some CD's he wasn't home so I dropped them in the letter box and left so around 2 minutes tried to start my car and it just won't fire it's turning over alright but almost as if it's not getting fuel or spark but I'm no mechanic
Any help would be super!!!
BTW it's a 2000 Polo GTi 1.6 16V
