Tapping noise from engine on start up, but not all the time

Hi there

Does anyone know what this problem can be, it doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes on start up the engine sounds very tappy / knocking on start-up, almost like the oil isn't gettign to the top of the engine. it dies away pretty quickly after a few seconds.
It also has a habbit of stalling straight away on start up, turn the key again and all is OK..

Are thes things anything I should be worried about???

PS still on first gearbox - and done 75k miles, fingers crossed

I have the tapping noise when the engine is cold.

Try changing your oil. But i don't think it'll help that much as its more of a polo thing. It happens to my relative's MK3 golf as well. He's changed the tappets as well as changi the oil. But he's had no luck in getting rid of the noise.

Hope this helps

This used to happen on my dads transporter :P I think its a hydraulic tappet that gets jammed causing it to do lots of random stuff. We replaced the airfilter and it fixed it - how odd is that!
