gearbox - how long left?

My gearbox now whines in 3rd, 4th and 5th and it's really annoying.

How long does anyone reckon it will last for? Warranty Direct won't touch it until it 'breaks'. I'm half tempted just to pay for a refurb, or maybe there's a way to help the gearbox 'break'.....

If you want it to break, just screw your car until it goes, lol. Easy as that

I agree if you want to break it just hammer the living daylights out of it doing some full throttle gear changes for good measure.

Try some 'crunch' changes! You don't need to use the clutch do you!?

Feels a bit fraudulent. I couldn't possibly consider that

Wheel spins, especially whilst turning will soon ruin any mk4/5 box quickly.

I had about 4.5K on my box from when it started whining till when it finally let go

What normally happens when the gearbox goes? Will I be able to drive it to a garage or will it just go pop?

At the moment there's no crunching or difficulty changing gears, it just whines horribly.

I think it will probably just go pop. 38k and my original one is still going with no signs apart from the gears crunching once in a blue moon

When my Polo Gti Gearbox went it whined for a few weeks then lost all drive with no indication it was gonna happen :(

My diff went dude, and it had to be towed home :(

Just keep an eye on it and take it easy it may go when you don't expect it and are miles from home if you hammer it.

Hammering it will reduce its life yeah but may leave you stranded :(

Looks like Polo GTI's are more at home on the back of a trailer than the road, certainly up in Aberdeenshire
