Couple of points, what size are the rear discs on the GTI, i know the fronts are 256mm, but the rears must be less.

i cant get up to the garage to measure so you's can tell me.....

Also, since i am doing the converison, i'm going to upgrade the pads...what's best to go for and wheres the cheapaest i will get? 8)

226mm solid. Wouldn't worry about using anything fancy, the back does hardly anything anyway. Obviously better up front would be good though. Just don't buy ferodo, they squel loads!

I've recently changed my Pads and discs at the rear since they must have seized at some point before I got the car, and the discs were quite warped (was in the process of repainting the calipers).
I bought ATE Discs and pads, which in total came to about £42 (from Euro Car Parts). In terms of fitting they were an absolute pain in the arse since the caliper requires a caliper winding tools to allow the caliper to be refitted - the design is a mildly updated Mk2 Golf GTI design - mildly better because only the pads and discs need replacing (on the Mk2 Golf you have to change the wheel bearing at the same time as well because of the assembly! - This from my little brother who fitted mine and who has a Mk2 16V).

Whats the size at the rear??

vdubit - did you mean 256mm instead of 226mm?

What about zimmerman? i'm quite keen on grooved discs as there will be a few engine mods happening so the power isnt going to be standard.

I'm not upgrading to G60 brakes....just want quality discs, pads and hoses! Hoses arent a prob, got goodrich ones coming

Rear, as vdubit said, 226mm.

Fronts are 256mm standard

Zimmerman discs and pagid pads are a very good combo. I've been using then on my VR for years and have had no probs.

im runing the pagid pads, and the make of the disks i bought from GSF where Zimmerman(g60) not drill or anything. they work spot on and the pads arn't too expensive either.

Yup I got a set of Goodridge hoses on the front. They firm up the braking a little bit.
